The Pacifica Foundation operates the nation's only truly progressive radio network. For several years, the Board had been taken over by a group who want to remove its progressive focus and make it much more mainstream. They wreaked havoc, firing and banning many of the award-winning, highly regarded, long-time on-air and behind-the-scenes personnel; installing armed guards and security cameras throughout their stations; dumbing-down the Pacifica Network News; spending the organization into near-bankruptcy; and suspending broadcast of the award-winning news magazine Democracy Now!

However, through a campaign that included more than a million letters sent by Progressive Portal users, a nationwide grass-roots movement was able to regain control of the network.
